The students are able to choose a topic (sharks in Scituate, shark anatomy, tagging, sharks in movies, etc.), as well as choose a way to present their research. We are encouraging students to create a presentation that can be displayed virtually, but are giving the option to choose what presentation format they are comfortable with. Their research projects are going to be showcased at the Scituate Science Spectacular on April 13, 2016 from 4:00- 7:00pm.
We have built a life size puzzle of a great white shark, and students have volunteered their time to paint the shark after school and at recess. Student presentations that have been completed electronically (video, website, slideshow, etc.) will be embedded in a QR code that we will apply to the shark. While visitors tour the Science Spectacular and complete the puzzle they can use a QR scanner to pull up the students projects and view them on their own devices. Students who wish to show their research in a different format (such as a poster or display board) will have their work set up on tables beside the puzzle.
The project will be completed in class this week, during ELA and Science, with some supplemental homework assignments to ensure it is completed on time. Although students are working in groups, they are being graded individually and are responsible for submitting individual elements towards the group project. We are using several of the Google Drive Apps to monitor the students as they are working on the project so we can see who is contributing and who may not be.
